It should go without saying that you don’t want to get behind the wheel after you’ve had too much to drink. Nonetheless, every year, authorities will make 16,000 stops on suspicion of DUI in San Diego County. Somewhere around 12,000 of those stops will represent eventual convictions. Sadly, this doesn’t tell us how many people make the decision to take the wheel when they shouldn’t and just don’t end up caught.
It should probably also go without saying that if you were to get in an accident while impaired, the last vehicle you’d want to hit is a van belonging to the Sheriff’s department. Yet that’s exactly what Sergio Garcia, 20, of Fontana is accused of doing this past Monday morning.
Authorities claim Garcia was driving a 2004 Nissan in the early hours of Monday, October 5th. Whether he was drunk or not, the young man definitely decided to take an off-ramp from SR 91 going the wrong direction. Unfortunately for him, this decision led him directly into a Sheriff’s department van. The only good news is that the three inside weren’t seriously injured in the accident. One of the passengers, an inmate, was taken in for a medical examination merely as a precaution. However, Garcia needed immediate medical attention and was transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities say the collision has left him with major injuries.
At this time, we don’t have all the facts, but CHP has reported they believe alcohol played a factor in the accident. Whether you end up hitting somebody or not, this is a good reminder to never take your keys out of your pocket once you know you’re intoxicated. If you do end up in a situation like Garcia’s, though, it pays to have experienced legal representation on your side. You’re going to be fighting charges of DUI and much worse.
