State Senator Arrested for DUI

It’s easy to let one bad decision snowball into something much worse if you’re not careful. That’s why, no matter who you are, you must always be cautious about the decisions you make, especially where the law is concerned. Regardless of your job or social status, you could suffer serious consequences for not heeding this advice.

State Senator Ben Hueso- D-San Diego, found this out the hard way recently. This past Friday, he was pulled over and eventually arrested for driving while under the influence. Of course, being that it was Labor Day weekend, perhaps this type of news shouldn’t be all that surprising. Arrests for DUIs across the city were up this year, though statewide, they were actually down.

Hueso is really lucky something far worse didn’t happen. He originally attracted the attention of law enforcement by driving the wrong way down a one-way street at 2:24 am. After that, he made an illegal U-turn. It was then that Office Julie Powell pulled Hueso’s Ford Fusion over in a nearby parking lot.

After conducting the appropriate field sobriety tests, Hueso was charged with driving under the influence and driving with a BAC of 0.08 or more, both of which are misdemeanors.

The legislator had spent the evening at a “Latino Caucus” that was being hosted at Il Fernaio, an eatery in Sacramento. However, the dinner ended at 9 pm, at which point Hueso was driven back to the capital. Whether or not he then continued to drink elsewhere is currently unknown. His actual BAC has not been reported either.

Although this could hurt his chances of reelection, Hueso is up this year, he should be thankful something worse didn’t happen. You should also take this as a reminder of the dangers of drunk driving. It’s also a good idea to always have the information for a qualified attorney on hand too.
