Although Saturday would involve an accident involving fireworks at the homecoming celebration, SDSU was struck with an even worse tragedy the night before. A sophomore psychology major was on the roof of her apartment building when she is believed to have slipped or otherwise lost her balance before falling. The 60-foot fall would end up killing her.
The incident happened at Paseo Place Apartments located on Lindo Paseo, a street just a few blocks from the school, between Campanile Drive and Montezuma Road. According to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office, the woman, who has been identified as 19-year old Melissa Kennon, fell at around 4 a.m.
It’s being reported that she was on the roof with a friend of hers when the accident occurred. Officials have confirmed that alcohol did play a factor. After emergency responders arrived at the scene, they brought Kennon to Mercy Hospital. Sadly, she would pass away the next morning.
No further details have been provided regarding the specifics of the accident. For example, we don’t know if she was sitting or standing when the fall occurred. We also don’t know where the 19-year old got the alcohol from. However, these are most likely facts the investigators will chase down in the days to come, though they might not make a statement regarding them.
Nonetheless, Kennon’s family may wish to press charges if details down the road describe a tragedy where someone else was to blame. Someone had to give or sell her the alcohol, for example. Kennon may have fallen due to shortcomings in the roof’s structural integrity. The list goes on and on. This is where a qualified attorney can be of assistance, by explaining what the next step should be in order to ensure a loved who passes away still gets justice.
