Keeping Kids Safe and Injury Free Around the Car

While you know that you have to drive safely on the road to keep the family safe, and you have a great car seat in the car for your little ones, it is also important to think about the other dangers that occur around your vehicle that could cause serious injuries to children. Many dangers surround the vehicle, and as a parent, and a conscientious driver, it is important to bear these in mind. Let’s look at some of the other things that can cause injury to kids in the car.

Seat belts keep kids safe, but they can be dangerous as well. Kids who are in the back and playing with the belts – pulling them all the way out, can become entangled in the belt. This can cause them to choke and even suffocate if it wraps around their head. Power windows can be a danger as well. Make sure the kids do not have access to the power window controls, or they could injure themselves. In addition, you need to make sure that you are careful when you put the windows up and down so their small hands do not receive an injury.

Back-over accidents are extremely tragic, but you do hear about them from time to time in San Diego. Whenever you are backing out of your driveway or parking space, be sure to go slowly  and always double check for children who might be just behind the car.

Of course, one of the biggest issues with child dangers in vehicles, and one that we hear about every summer, is heatstroke. Putting the kids in the vehicle unattended at any time, especially when it is hot out, can cause death. Always think before you do anything with your children, just to make sure they are always safe.
