San Diego Auto Accident Attorneys

According to the 2005 fatality figures by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

“Over 42,000 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes and approximately 3 million people were injured. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that 43% of motor vehicle crashes occur at intersections or are ‘intersection related.’ This figure includes crashes resulting from any crossing conflicts, including ramp merging areas, driveways, red light running, and divided median crossovers.”

Just think about it. Intersections make up so little of the roads we drive. There are much more straight highways, roads, freeways, and streets. Yet, somehow, almost half of all collisions happen at intersections in one way or another.

Nearly half of all collisions happen at intersections

The Problem

There are numerous different problems that could occur at intersections. You probably have seen a few people run red lights just because they were either not paying attention or were willing to risk the chance of an accident just because they were in a hurry.

Because of the nature of many intersection related accidents, there is a high risk of severe injury. Consider the following statistics:

  • 1.9 million intersection crashes happened in the United States in one year.
  • 219,000 of these crashes were due to red light running.
  • These intersection crashes resulted in 181,000 injuries and 1,000 deaths.
  • 58% of pedestrian injuries occurred at intersections.
  • Intersection crashes that result in fatalities account for one in every five crashes overall.
  • 63% of people see someone run a red light several times through the day. Most people report seeing a red light run once a day.
  • One out of every three Americans has known someone who was either killed or seriously injured because of a red light runner intersection collision.
  • Over 40% of fatalities involving pedestrians occurred at intersections that did not have a crosswalk.

Intersection collisions are common and they can result in serious injury. That’s because many of the collisions involve impact directly into a driver or passenger.

The Results

With so many intersection collisions happening every day, the results are numerous injuries and fatalities that deserve compensation from the responsible party. Intersection collisions can occur for different reasons, but they are especially dangerous when involving a distracted driver, a driver on their cell phone, an intoxicated driver, or drivers who are impatient or angry.

In these cases, someone is responsible. Someone ran a red light or merged without paying attention. This person made a choice either on purpose or inadvertently; and that decision resulted in damage to a vehicle, injury, or even fatalities. Because someone is at fault, they need to be held responsible for what they did.

If you or a loved one has been the victim of intersection collisions in San Diego, then you may be entitled to compensation of some type. However, holding the responsible party liable isn’t as simple as making a claim. You will also need to choose an accident lawyer who is aggressive, willing to fight for your rights, and willing to work toward the best possible outcome for you. You simply cannot leave your claim to just anyone, or you may not get the best results.
