On February 14 in Chula Vista, a multiple car collision led to one fatality and numerous injuries. “A chain reaction series of crashes on a freeway near Sweetwater Regional Park killed a 37-year old man early Friday and left a woman under arrest for suspicion of driving while intoxicated.” (Man Dies, Woman Arested in Chain-Reaction Freeway Crash, 2014)
In this accident, a man behind the wheel of a 2007 Jaguar was driving northbound along a curve on state route 125. He lost control of the speeding vehicle and then hit a center guardrail and was ejected from the vehicle. He was killed at the scene. After this, two vehicles collided when trying to avoid the accident and then a Hummer collided with those two vehicles. The woman driving the Hummer was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Because of the severity of this accident, the highway was closed for 5.5 hours. The cost of the wrecks soared into the tens of thousands since there were so many vehicles involved and so many emergency responders needed on the scene.
DUI accidents happen all too often, and they result in fatalities as well as serious injuries. In this case, perhaps if the woman driving the Hummer had not been under the influence of alcohol, she could have avoided colliding with the three car wreck.
